Week Six Assignment

While many cultures have laws or rules about acts of violences which can include murder, it is a different case for the Yanomamo populations. They have different cultures and rules than we do in the West and each question I answer below will delve into the differences.

1. In Yanomamo populations, there isn't a written rule against violence and specifically murder. There are customs but they still have murders. In the case of a murder between two villages, the village of the person who was killed will attack the other village in retaliation. This retaliation does work as a deterrent of more crime in the long run but there are no specific rules to stop it from happening in the first place.

2. Like explained above, when a person who belongs to a specific village is killed, the village retaliates and attacks/raids the opposing village.

3. Unokais are people who have killed. There are some benefits of being unokais like reputation and protection to the village they belong to, which is why they might choose to kill rather than be non-unokais.

4. There are different aspects to the culture and revenge killings. Politically, there is no system which can cause rivals but with no specific leaders. This may lead to hierarchy of those who have killed more than others but there is no structure. This applied the same to social status. However, this can lead to organization and community of each village to protect each other from other raiders who retaliate. This leads to culturally what women look for in a partner and how they raise their future children.

5. We need laws against killing especially when it is something most don't want to because it makes clear what is and isn't socially acceptable. As described in the article, the retaliation serves as a deterrent which is applied the same to laws. In our current society, there is a good portion of the population who don't want to kill and the laws support that. This makes it that violence isn't socially acceptable so when acts of violence are committed against others, they can't retaliate with more violence but rather let leaders in their community serve justice. When you have constant retaliation, the issue persists because it just creates a cycle of more violence and hurt.

  1. Hi Kady, I found your posts really interesting. I liked your explanation on why we need laws against killing. I could agree with you on that because it's true how killing is not socially acceptable. I feel like without these laws we would not be protected from people with antisocial behavior.
